Excerpt

Regan could still remember the river that had once flowed through the city. It was called the Styx, but instead of being a realm of the dead, the city was once very alive. Nobody knew how the fires started or why the inferno still burned even after a decade. Parole was once a thriving cosmopolitan city on the healthy artery of the huge river, bringing shipping and trade and fish and all kinds of industry. But now the river was dry, leaving a huge, empty riverbed around and underneath Parole. Once the water was gone, the money went up in smoke. Then someone lit a spark, no one quite knew how. They said some bozo had probably dropped a cigarette down a crack in the asphalt, and the fires just never stopped burning. Now, the city by the river was dry as a bone. The most precious treasure in the hellish place was water, and the armored-truck convoys that shipped it in past the men in the gas masks and the electrified gates. And those gates were always closed to the people inside, the barbed-wire fences surrounding Parole guarded by men with black combat armor and guns.

And the barrier. It rose above the city walls, curved and round like a fishbowl. Or maybe more like a giant soap bubble, an iridescent half-sphere that completely encapsulated the entire city of Parole. Regan didn’t know what the barrier was made of, whether it was solid or some kind of energy shield. He didn’t care. Nobody got in or out. Not even birds. The only way out was in a pine box or body bag, and everyone who tried found that out the hard way. It didn’t matter how they fought, Regan thought. In a day, a week, a year, the ground would disappear from under them—ashes, ashes, they’d all fall down and burn in the dried-up Styx. God, he missed the Styx.
